Background
Many people wonder what the difference is between art, technology and design and the
relationship between them. First you must know technology makes possibilities, design makes solutions and art makes questions. With Nicole ’s background in Visual Arts and multimedia she use s all 3 every day when she design s and I am South African wasn ’t any different.
I am South African
was truly inspired by Heritage Day in S o uth Africa 24 September 2020. In South Africa there are so many unique and beautiful cultures and for one day every year they get to show off and embrace all their cultures together.
As a Caucasian , English designer in South Africa Nicole wanted to add her stamp and show her admiration and pride for her country, not with clothes , as many do on the but in her own way.
Design explained
The woman’s facial features are Nicole ’s side profile with South Africa being the h ead dress , which is commonly worn in South Africa during celebrations a s It is a deeply rooted African tradition that has both spiritual and cultural significance. Both v isual elements combine her European and African heritage in one.
Why the specific colours though, well, Living Coral ( represents embracing community and oneness . As energy medicine practitioner Anne Christine Tooley says, Living coral is enabled through the Laws of Nature to grow and flourish in our oceans and seas but can only do so by giving up its individuality and attaching to another piece of the whole. In this respect, coral is representativ e of the community or global/humanitarian consciousness”.
Living Coral (pink) therefore represents the ability to fill ourselves with light and life, expand without ego, to trust our community, to embrace togetherness and oneness to build something beautiful and bigger than ourselves. S o obviously this was the best colour to use for part of this design. She used Gold too as it is associated with love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom. The two colours to her knowledge , complimented each other well, not j ust visually but in what they represent too. Nicole wanted to create a design that represented individuality but also togetherness.
Purpose
Purpose and and significance of the design was to represent that, although we are all individuals, we stand together. So why not use this design as a reminder or symbol of of uniqueness but togetherness.
